My Story

From homeschool mom to Barton tutor

I homeschooled all nine of my children until each was ready to enter public school. That moment came at a different time for every child.

While homeschooling my fourth child, I noticed he learned differently. Not wrong. Differently. Reading was a struggle, and even though he did not fight me, he was very frustrated. What I heard most was, "Mom, I just can't do it."

With the help of a wonderful guide who has since become my Barton mentor, I found the Barton Reading and Spelling System. My son became unstoppable. Not because he raced through the material, and not because he loved every lesson. It was because reading had finally started to click. The lessons made sense to him and to the way his brain learns.

Years later, my ninth child came to me before seventh grade and said she wanted to improve her spelling before starting public school. We worked the Barton System on an intensive schedule, and she walked into that school ready. The program works when it is done well and done right.

Since then, I have taken many students through Barton Reading and Spelling. It is amazing what this curriculum can do when a student believes in it, and the right tutor leads it.

I have dyslexia myself, so I know this journey from both sides. That is why this business is called Be Bold Dyslexia.

Sound like your child?

Every child is different, and no single sign means dyslexia. This list is not a diagnosis. It is a starting point. If several of these sound like your child, it is worth a conversation.

Preschool +
  • Mixing up sounds and letters
  • Difficulty rhyming
  • Delayed speech or stuttering
  • Trouble memorizing the alphabet, a phone number, or an address
  • Late to settle on a dominant hand
  • Difficulty tying shoes
  • Unusual or tight pencil grip
  • Slow, labored writing
  • Confusing left and right
Elementary +
  • Reversing letters and numbers past the end of first grade

Cancellation policy

I do not have a formal cancellation policy at this time. Life happens, and we always do our best. But progress only comes when you show up. I cannot make progress for you. Barton is a marathon, not a sprint.

I ask for 24 hours' notice by email or text. If I ever have to cancel on you, I will always offer a makeup session. If you cancel on me, I will do my best to offer a makeup, but I cannot always guarantee one.

What You Can Expect

How I run my sessions

Every tutor runs sessions differently. Here is how I run mine.

I am about 90 percent remote and open to in-person sessions as well. Some students still come to my home. Whether your child comes through my door or through my computer, building a relationship comes first. When a student trusts me, they want to work for me.

Barton is difficult. It can be tiring, and sometimes it is boring. Once I have a working relationship with a student, I know when to push and when to pull back and try another tactic. Many students come to me with their confidence at an all-time low, because they have not had the right help at school. So I work hard at rebuilding confidence in every session. Most of the time it happens naturally.

We use all 50 minutes of our time together: instruction, relationship, games built on our material, review, and constant building on what we have already learned.

Beyond the sessions

  • At the end of each week, I send parents an email covering what your child worked on and the progress they made. I include the sight words your child is working on and everything worth bragging about, so you can share in the wins. If I have any behavior concerns, I address them there too.
  • I am glad to attend 504 and IEP meetings. I have sat in many of them, and I will be an advocate for you and your child. I just need advance notice so I can schedule around my other students.
